Ruskie,
No the mother didn't take the babe back was fostered out and brought up in the Hackney area and eventually took the foster parents name when he started school. The relative that I'm trying to help (the babes daughter) doesn't know what happened to the mother but is sure she wasn't on the scene after the birth.
I have tried searching births etc for likely girls to try and trace her parentage on a wide scale but nothing seems to add up.
In fact I'm trying to connect a James Archibald and Martha Holby but so far haven't found a marriage for them as it is believed they were her parents although I'm still trying to find out where that piece of information came from.

Hi all

Well! this will teach me  not to just accept someone's spelling and teach me keep looking outside the square -
there is a village called STYAL in Cheshire, commuter access to Manchester and the airport there.
So while being told she came from Manchester it looks like it's actually Chashire if she was telling the truth. Lets hope this may lead somewhere.

ERO have electoral registers for 1918 and 1929 available online at http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk. Click on images and then search for electoral Romford.

High Street and High Road, Romford are different roads. Searching the 1918 register, the High Street is on images 314, 333 & 334 but house numbers are all below 100. I've looked for High Road and there are some households listed in the Chadwell Heath ward but without house numbers, images 194+. In this ward though the entries are alphabetically by surname, not grouped by road name.

There is a women's prison at Styal, Cheshire. From the internet, "The main prison buildings were built as an orphanage in the 1890s which closed in 1956. The site opened as a women's prison in 1962"

Thank you for that Douglas I will have a go at looking at the images but if it's only names I'd better keep fingers crossed for one that I know of which is only Archibald or Holby.

Thanks again for your help

Thank you Douglas and bless you for taking an interest.
Given some of the clues that my relative gave me I think I may have just found the Martha and James prev.mentioned in Lancashire although her dates are out for the ages of all concerned by some years.
maybe this will help me tie in some of the other bits and pieces to Romford.

No 275 High Rd Romford appears to be a residential address. The 1911 shows a husband and wife with their son and two lodgers, interestingly the wife's occupation is  Midwife.

Look for Edith Minne WALTON.
