Marriage Records - Cleer
« on: Monday 30 July 12 17:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I finally made a breakthrough on my Irish ancestors and was lucky enough to find my great great grandparents marriage record. Their names were Maria Darcy and Thomas Cleer.  They were married 6/23/1856 in Parish of Kinnitty in Co. Offaly.  Their denomination is listed as Roman Catholic.  I was also lucky enough to also find Thomas' baptism and two possible baptism records for Maria.  I am trying to decide which baptism record is Maria's. Does the Catholic churches in Ireland maintain old marriage records and is there a possibility that the record would contain information on Maria's parent so I can determine which baptism record is hers?

Any help is appreciated.

I presume you found the marriage on the RootsIreland website ?

Very few RC marriage records for this timeframe include any details on parents, and as far as I know, with a few exceptions, most of the records on RootsIreland are complete transcripts of the originals.

Remember that not all parishes have records back as far as the likely dates of baptism for Thomas and Maria, so there's no guarantee a baptism record for them is available, or online.

The old RC parish is more commonly listed as Roscumroe, or sometimes Roscumroe, Lackaroe & Kinnity. Films of the records are available through LDS Family History Centres and cover baptisms and marriages back to early 1833. The film reference is 0979695 item 4-5.

There is just one Cle(a)r family on Griffith's Valuation in Kinnity

thomas clear kinnitty

This could be your Thomas OR his father !

There don't seem to be any Darcy's on the Kinnitty GV

BTW Have you ever been to Kinnitty it really is beautiful and has the most beautiful castle there !

Thank you.  I was hoping to figure out which Maria was my great great grandmother, but maybe I will never know.

No, I have not been to Kinnitty nor any part of Ireland.

re the Griffith's record mentioned by Tara - the publication date for that section of the Valuation was the 17th August 1854, so probably surveyed a month or so before that.

Hi there,

What were Maria's children's names and in what order were they born ?

Due to traditional naming patterns at the time, this can be a very good indication of the couple's parent's names (although there are always exceptions) !

Few RC marriages of that time have the father's names on them, but none have the mother's name as far as I am aware.

Have you bought Thomas and Maria's marriage transcription from rootsireland to see what other info it contains ?

Tara

Tara,

Sorry for the delay.  Maria's children were as follows (oldest to youngest): Mary, Annie, Timothy, James, Ellen, Thomas, Margaret, Sarah, Alice and Elizabeth.
Yes I did purchase the marriage information but it did not contain names.
