Burial in Newburn
« on: Monday 30 July 12 21:29 BST (UK) »
I have found Alice Tulip on FindMyPast (but don't have membership) buried in 1785 in Newburn.  I wonder if anyone is able to find out any further details - an age or husband would be what I'm after.

Many thanks
Joanna

A shot in the dark as you gave no other info for Alice;

Burial;
Alice TULIP,
17 November 1834, St Andrew BT, Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland
Age 100,
Abode Heddon Poor House
File No 21648
(age may be out as she was in the Workhouse)

A SAMUEL/ALICE Tulip has these Children christened in Northumberland;
MATTHEW 13 June 1784
THOMAS, 28 Jan 1787, Father a Weaver
JAMES 01 Aug 1790 same occp
(Source of all records FreeREG www.freereg.org.uk)
Abode is also on Records.

Also on Familysearch;
Marriage;
Samuel TULIP
Alice GREEN

If the correct Marriage then there must be other Children born c 1771-1783

Trish :)

That certainly could be Alice. She was born in 1746 in Durham and that is the correct marriage in 1770 with all the children.   :)

However I'm struggling with the fact that the last two children born, James and Thomas have Samuel as coming from Nesbit which is 55 miles away from where everything else took place and I also have a baptism for him in Ovingham. Also the fact that those two baptisms have him down as a weaver but I've got him as a pitman (just can't find my source where I got that info from at the moment!).

Samuel died in Heworth in 1829.

Nesbit was the place they were residing at the time of those Christenings not where they were from.

Matthew Tulips1784 christening has Families abode as Fulans Moor and Friend Tudops in 1782 as Fowlan's Moor so definitely the same Family.

As to change of occp if you have other info of it, I suppose if you had all those mouths to feed you took what work was available at the time :)

What a great age Alice made it to.
(no Telegraphs from the Queen in those days!)

Thanks Trish

I haven't found the evidence yet that I thought I had for him being a coalminer but as you say maybe he took what work he could.

Hi Joanna
I am another descendent of Sam and Alice and I can help you with the Nesbitt problem. Fowlans Moor was slightly North East of Harlow Hill and Nesbitt Hill Head is a farm between Harlow Hill and Ouston on the road to Stamfordham.  This area is close to the border between the parishes of Stamfordham and Ovingham, which I think explains the baptisms in 2 parishes. Durham County Council web-site has a good old map feature which allows you to go back in time to see where Fowlans Moor was, unfortunatley the modern aerial photo is blocked because it is now Ministry of Defence land (Albemarle Barracks).
I think that Sam was a hand weaver  (possibly of linen ) but for his sons that may not have been an option due to the industrial revolution, hence their move down river to the mining and manufacturing centres.
Incidently I found a record of an accidental death of a Samuel Tulip age 86(sic) on the |Heworth Wagonway in 1825 (Newcastle Courant July 25 1825).
Hope this is of some use
Ellen
