Occupation "Ropemaker Seaman"
« on: Tuesday 31 July 12 04:11 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, John Dingley, listed his occupation as "Rope Maker, Seaman" in the 1851 Bridgwater Parish census. Any ideas what his jobs may have been? Did he sail? Is there any way to find out if he sailed on ships or served in a Navy of any kind?
Dingley, Bridgwater, Somerset, England, St. Mary's, St. John the Baptist, The Shoe Factory- Bridgwater, Ropewalk, Ports of Bridgwater, Quakers in Bridgwater

Hi I believe he was a Ropemaker FOREMAN ie possibly a Master Ropemaker in charge of others, in 1861 Census RG09/1625/5/3 it is clearly on the original Foreman.

It looks like he has re-married by the 1861 to a Mary, in the household is a Mary Benington b c 1775 shown as Mother in Law!
