Wrong father named??
« on: Tuesday 31 July 12 21:52 BST (UK) »
I have Charles Watts b c1849 living in Lavendon Buckinghamshire with wife Elizabeth.
They are on numerous census, but on 1871, it states he was born in Monmouth, whereas all the others it says he was born where he lived!

I have looked on the BMD and there is no Charles Watts born in Buckingshire any time close, but there is a Charles born in Monmouth.

When checking the 1861/51 census for Wales, there is only one Charles that fits the bill, living in Monmouth with parents James & Sarah and siblings.

Here is the spanner in the works!  On the IGI, there is a marriage of a Charles Wite Watts in Lavendon in 1867 to an Elizabeth Holmes.  He is the correct Charles as there are some of the children christened after the marriage that match the census.  BUT Charles' father has been put as Thomas Watts.  Try as I may, I cannot find Thomas Watts with a Charles either in Monmouth or in Lavendon Bucks.

What do you think?  Am I missing something or has Charles given the wrong name for his father?
I'm not young enough to know everything.

Hi Snowy - are you saying that the IGI give his father as Thomas? Have you seen the marriage certificate to see what that says, it could just be a mistake in transcription by the IGI

WATTS, Charles Wite
 Newport Pagnell  Buckinghamshire
Year of registration: 1867
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec

No, I haven't seen the marriage certificate.
It is the IGI that states his father's name as Thomas, but I can only find a family with the father being James.

Thanks Shirl.
I am convinced this is the correct baptism.  I cannot find a Charles Watts baptised anywhere near Lavendon in Bucks for that time.  It was going back through the census's that I suddenly discovered that his place of birth had suddenly changed to Monmouth.
I would really like to confirm the entry on the IGI for his marriage that states his father as Thomas.....???

Bucks FHS offer a marriage search by email ( and Lavendon St Michael has been transcribed) for just £1 so you could ask for a look up and see exactly who Charles' father was  www.bucksfhs.org.uk
