Earls Barton - Ingram
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 12:29 BST (UK) »
This is my first post so please bear with me.  I've hit a brick wall with Amos (Rowland) Ingram b. 1837/8 in Earls Barton (according to censuses 1861 - 1891). He died in 1892.

Despite searching on and off for 18 months, I can find no birth record, also no trace of him until the 1861 census when he is married to Elizabeth Warren (m 1856 Earls Barton).

Marriage cert states father as Mark Ingram, however Mark and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) have no Amos living with them in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.  They do however have an Agnes (b 1838) and my gt grandmother Harriet in the '41, then in the '51 they have a Thomas (b 1838) plus Harriet, Samuel and Christopher.  Neither Agnes or Thomas can be found on birth or any other censuses. (There is another Thomas Ingram b 1833, son of James and Ann who can be traced forward).

I've found a non conformist christening of an 'Ann Rowland Ingram' in Finedon on 2 Jul 1837, parents Mark & Betsy Ingram.

Is it possible that mistakes were made in the names on the early censuses, and the christening as well?  It seems a bit of a long shot??  Looking for any ideas, as I'm in Western Australia so am a bit stuck!

Welcome to Rootschat!

I'm afraid that I've probably had no more luck than you have trying to trace Amos, but just a few thoughts ...

If Amos was born in 1837, then civil registration (certificated BMDs) did not start until September of that year, so there's a good chance that the only record you will find is a baptism one.

I note that his parents Mark and Betsey (nee WILLIS) were married at Overstone in 1835, the bride's parish.  Have you checked the Overstone registers?

I do wonder if Ann Rowland INGRAM and Amos Rowland INGRAM were twins.   Could they have been fostered out of the family (perhaps because of mother's ill health), being recorded under another surname and that's why they don't appear with the family in the 1841/1851 censuses?  I also wonder if Agnes and Thomas (both born 1838) were another set of twins who arrived the following year - perhaps too much for mum to cope with!

The GenesReunited website has two Amos INGRAMS (born c1837/8 in Earls Barton) - may be worth contacting the submitter.

There is a Northamptonshire Baptism Index which goes up to 1848.  Interestingly, the publisher Alan Clarke - who will often do a free look up - lists INGRAMs of Earls Barton in his own personal surnames list.

Hope the above may give you some further leads to follow.

Many thanks Pennie!  There is one new fact there, the date of marriage for Mark and Betsy which isn't available through Ancestry, so that's great!  In many ways I wish I still lived in Northamptonshire when it comes to doing this research - I'm afraid all of this 'look ups' and parish records is new to me as I've just used online resources.

You mentioned the Northamptonshire Baptism Index and publisher Alan Clarke - how does one go about asking for a 'look up'??

My sister (also in Western Australia) is on Genes Reunited so it will be her contributions for Amos - we've both searched as much as we can for our elusive ancestor - but not being on the spot makes it very hard!

Thanks again.

Glad to be of help!

Here's the full entry from the Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837):

12 NOV 1835 - Mark INGRAM (of Earls Barton, bachelor) to Betsy WILLIS (otp, spinster) at Overstone CofE

If you can find the actual parish register entry, then this will also give names of witnesses (and occasionally other information) which may be of help.

A few more Northamptonshire online resources for you:

www.freereg.org.uk - free online transcriptions of parish registers (with a fairly good coverage for Northamptonshire)

www.dspace.dial.pipex.com/anna.smart/nth.htm#SBB2 - the Northamptonshire Look-Up Exchange (free look-ups by individuals)

www.northants1841.fsnet.co.uk - Alan Clarke's website

Good hunting!

Hi.

Welcome to Rootschat Edrubava  :).

I have indexed the full details of Finedon Methodist Church records.

PG 27, NO 186

Ann Rowland, Daughter of Mark Ingram & Betsy of Earls Barton
(daur of John & Ann Willis) Bap 2 July 1837.

As you will see it was just when Civil Registration began.

The year and date of birth was not totally readable 4th ? 183?.

If you look below my posting you will see My Useful Northants Links
which maybe of help (Alan and Marilyn are on them also).

Just had a thought.

You could ask the Northamptonshire Record Office by e-mail
if they could look at the entry and say what the birth information
says as my copy has large blobs over the area where it is written.

Thanks Sandy.  Since your previous message I've been looking at the suggested websites, so may find out something more about Amos if I keep digging.

What an excellent resource this is!  I've read through some of the posts and it's amazing what people can find out.  Maybe someone is busy looking for my elusive Amos right now!!
