The 1911 return states that Matthew and Elizabeth are married 6 years - so c1895. There seems to be a good possible match on the BMD Index in Carlow district in 1904. Do you have this cert ?

There would be two useful clues on the marriage record. Their father's names and occupations - both of which could help work back in time or locate the correct families in earlier census.

I had a quick look also but didn't see anything likely. What address does Matthew give when he married ?

It's possible that he is missing form the census e.g. page lost/damaged or never filmed or never enumerated for some reason, but probably more likely that he is mistranscribed. His address at marriage could help if you need to browse by location to check for mistranscriptions, and his father's name and occupation give another angle to try when searching the census ...

I had a check of the marriage cetifficate and his home at the time of marriage was Brownes Hill Estate.I do know that he also worked for the Browne-Clayton family as a groom and also as a footman.
           Thanks for your help,Diarmuid.

I'm guessing this is his wife with her family on the 1901 return in Carlow town - no sign of any Crow[e] households nearby ... :

   Scully household

The only Crow[e] listing I see in Carlow town Electoral district is an Edward Crowe, single man born Co. Wexford and age 60.

Brownshill house and the gate lodge are in the townland of Kernanstown - but no sign of Matthew or any Crowes there at that time - see :

  Kernanstown townland - 1901

The groom listed is a John Somers.

Would Matthew have been already working for the BrowneHill estate at age 18 ?

Hi there

I think this is him !

matthew crowe

While not a perfect match, in my experience stable lad's usually went on to be coachmen.

Also the Wexford reference would tie in with one of Shane's finds !

BTW If this is him in 1901 It is beautiful there looking up to the Rock of Dunamaise !
