I think this is him !

matthew crowe
...

that looks good...   I saw that earlier but ruled it out because of the place of birth, but never spotted the occupation. The form was not filled in by a family member, which could explain a mixup in the counties..

I'll have a look for Heathlodge townland, and see how close to Carlow it is..

that townland is close to Port Laoise.. about 35km from Carlow town.

I think the area is still known locally as 'The Heath'

I know 'The Heath / Ballycarrol' well, it's on the outskirts of Portlaoise town.

While not 'near' Carlow in the technical sense, it's not a million miles away either.  I would imagine stable hands moved to where the work was !

Only 2 Crowe men were having children in Carlow at this time

Edward Crowe and Ellen Ryan

edward crowe on 1901 census

OR

Daniel Crowe and Catherine Roache

daniel crowe in 1901 census

I presume that one of these men is your great grandfather !!

Do you want help going back further or was it just the 1901 census that you were looking for ?

Please let us know

Hi Tara & Shane, thank you both for the information you have found so far.The Matthew Crowe on the census looks like a strong match,I say this as the age is correct he was a groom and also did become a footman.
The name of my grandfathers farther is Patrick Crowe.
As for the birth cert link it failed to come through,I do actually have a copy of his birth cert and it reads as follows:Name: Matthew
Fathers name and place of dwelling: Patrick Crowe,Brownes Hill
Mothers name:Catherine Crowe:formerly Deegan.
Rank or profession of father:Herd
Once again thank you both very much,
     Regards Diarmuid
