Help with Army Service Record please.
« on: Tuesday 07 August 12 21:37 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am writing out a full description of my GG Uncle that served in WW1, but the handwriting in this section is very hard to read.
I can make out the first part which states he joined the Royal Engr's Signal Depot. Posted as a Driver on the 22/11/15 to Fenny Stratford Signal Depot, but under that i need help.

Any translations greatly welcomed. Thank you.

I wonder if the Med Ex Force refers to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.

It's Haynes Park Signal Depot, RE - it's in Bedfordshire. Here is some background:

http://www.greatwarci.net/women/jersey/nr/pdf/nellie-rault.pdf

It looks as if he was due to embark for the BEF France on the 9th but was sent to the MEF a few days later. You should look on what is normally page 4 of the record - it usually also has his next of kin, medal details etc. It should summarize the Home and overseas service.

By March 1916 the MEF was basically just Salonika.

Wow brilliant! Thank you very much. I do have another form that has additional information but I dont want to be rude and post it all! Half the fun of Genealogy is the challenge  ;D

I won't turn down help though and If anyone has access to WW1 records then they can look him up. His name is Luther Hankins and he was born in 1891. I can make out some of the writing, but I need to look up some of the military codes to work out what it all means :) If someone is willing to help me work out his movements then i would be very grateful and then I can read up about it all.

Many thanks to all that have posted replies.

Tidgy

Edit:

So have i got this right?

22/11/15 - Posted to RE Signals Corp Fenny Stratford (but he remained at home)
17/12/15 - His records were transferred to Haynes Park Signal Depot (but he didn't go?)
22/11/15 to 8/03/16 - Luther remained at home
09/03/16 - due to go to BEF but didnt
13/03/16 - He embarked for the MEF

So when would he have done his training? He only signed up on the 22nd November...
