Help - Anna Maria White/Whyte born Wye
« on: Wednesday 08 August 12 23:38 BST (UK) »
Trying to find my GG Grandmother's birth.  All I know is that she was born in Wye, Kent between 1834 and 1838.  Her parents names were John and Elizabeth White/Whyte.   She was living in Scotland in 1861 and died there in 1915.  She had moved up to Edinburgh with my GG Grandfather who had been a Drill Instructor in the army.    Can anyone help?

According to the transcription I have of the Wye Parish Registers there is no baptism of an Anna Maria White in that Parish.  However, there is a baptism in Kennington (adjoining Parish) for

Anna Maria d/o Elizabeth WHITE date 8 April 1838.

In the address field the mother was said to be of Kennington.  There was no other information on the transcription.

Not sure this helps but Anna Maria is not that common a name and being in the neighbouring village it may well be worth considering.

Regards,
Tony

Many thanks for this Tony.   I think it is probably her.  It has been hard to pin down her year of birth as her marriage and death certificates differed.  I expected the census to be out but not her marriage certificate.  As you say Anna Maria was not a common name and with the Parish of Kennington adjoining Wye I think this is possibly her.   I shall try more research using Kennington.

Again many thanks.

I wondered if Elizabeth WHITE was the one who married Richard HOPKINS in 1841?  Living in Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppey, Kent 1861 is:

Elizabeth HAWKINS head wid 41 charwoman b.Boughton Aluph Kent
Harriett HOPKINS dau 18? b.Wye Kent
Jane A HAWKINS dau 4 b.Willesboro' Kent
William STERLING lodger unm 44 ag lab b.Bursted Essex
RG9/532 folio 20 page 2

Henry HAWKINS m Elizabeth HOPKINS 1850

Elizabeth with husband Henry HAWKINS is in the Union workhouse 1851 with children but no daughter Ann(a) Maria.  The HOPKINS' appear in 1841 with a 3 yeard old child "Mary".

Nothing conclusive but can you eliminate the above family?
When, where and whom did Ann(a) Maria WHITE marry?

Hi

Sorry not my Elizabeth White.  My GG parents were Elizabeth White and John White.   I believe her maiden name was White before she married.  Their daughter, Anna Maria, went on to marry James Howie and lived in Scotland after she was married.

Sorry, hope you find what you are looking for.

Ah, but if she was the Anna Maria daughter of Elizabeth WHITE baptised in Kennington 1838 then it's likely that her mother wasn't married at the time thus we only have Anna's word (or that of her family) that her father was a John WHITE.  We may need to think outside the box a bit for this one.

I'm not researching them, just trying to assist you ;)

Best wishes

Casalguidi :)
