1891 Lookup please
« on: Wednesday 25 May 05 12:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace 2 related families living in the Connahs Quay - Northop area, the first that of Thomas Shaw & family in 1891. He married Susannah Jones in 1887 and had children Benjamin Thomas in 1888 & Mary Elizabeth in 1890. He is missing from the 1881 LDS, but may have been at sea, as was his brother Hugh. Thomas & family are present in 1901 but Hugh's family (wife Anne ) seems to be reduced to one known offspring Samuel b.1877. 3 other children Annie b.1890, Mary b.1886 & John b.1888 appear on the same page 1901.

Any help would be appreciated trying to untangle all these Shaws & Jones'.

Hi Paul,

No I don't have their certificate, that may come later.  I believe they married in 1887 quite late in life (36 & 38).
This line is my primary interest currently as they are my partners Gt Grandparents, and my partners Uncle Dennis who lives in Italy is interested in finding out more.
To explain, he is one of 12 children born to Mary Elizabeth Shaw of Connahs Quay (parents ran a pub, but father had previously been a mariner) and a John Ernest Eric Pratt, a former American sailor.
Mr Pratt was run over & killed by a car in 1934 (probably drunk at the time), and his eldest son Thomas attended him at the scene. Thomas (MBE for services to cricket) died unexpectedly in 1999 just before he was due to travel to Italy for a holiday, (wouldn't go before his wife died as she wouldn't travel) when Dennis was intending to get as much information as possible about his father. We know John EE Pratt was in the American Merchant Marine, also he served 4 years 85 days in the Royal Engineers in the WW1. Various attempts at finding out more have so far failed, but we continue to persevere, and in the meantime so I'm tidying up any loose ends I can find on the Welsh side, and you never know a descendant might turn up somewhere.
The loose end I'm currently interested in is Hugh SHAW b.1853, who in 1881 was away, Wife Anne listing herself as Wife (Head) & Captains Wife. She already had Samuel Dodd (her maiden name), and was expecting Mary Davies SHAW b.1/5/1881, which is probably why sister Elizabeth DODD is present.
A further birth vis the LDS is that of Hugh SHAW in 1883.
Using the Census Decoder in 1901 I find Samuel SHAW group with several other young SHAW's, Annie b.1890, Mary b.1886 & John b.1888, and was wondering if they all belong to Hugh.
Where's Ann gone? Is Hugh still at sea? Tanja says Samuel lists himself as son, implying his father is still alive. At least we now know the answer to Life the Universe & Everything is 42, we just need to find out what the question was!

Thanks to Tanja some of the loose ends are looking tidier.

Hugh & Ann's children identified as Samuel, Annie, Mary, John & Robert. Just want to know what happened to Hugh and Ann.

Hi, I think I have found Hugh (and Samuel) in 1891 in the England Census.
He's on board the 'Ann Crewdson'
RG12/1730
RD Plymouth
Sub-RD Charles
Folio 99
Hugh Shaw, Crew, Married, 36,  Master, employed, born Conah's Quay Flint
Christopher Peterson, married, 36, mate, do., b. Norway
Sydney Bartlett, single, 22, AB Seaman, b. Plymouth Devonshire
John Well(+something I can't read), single, 35, AB Seaman b. Preston Lancashire
Samuel Shaw, single, 14, Cook/Ordinary Seaman, b. Conah's Quay Flint

How's that?  ;)

And in the England 1901, I have just come across something strange:

A ship with 5 people on board, 4 of which are Shaws born Conah's Quay as follows:
Humphrey Shaw, married, 54, master
Thomas, mate, 26, single
Hugh, AB, single, 22 (Image is clearly 22)
William Henry, OS, single, 14
+ a Thomas Davies (Javies?/Jones?), cook, 17, b. Flintshire

Any use?

Tanja,
I've had a good poke about in the LDS, where I found 2 brothers of Thomas & Hugh's father Hugh. In the 1881, one of these, John had accumulated a largish family, one of whom could be the Thomas on your ship in Dorset in 1901. He's listed as Apprentice to Ship Carpenter age 18 - 2 yrs out.

As for the rest no trace of any of them in 1881, or any connection via LDS info.

Also I notice in 1881 that Connah's Quay doesn't seem to figure as a birthplace, Wepre or Northop being used instead, & both very near to Connah's Quay.
