Ticehurst of Ashburnhamanother mystery to solve...
« on: Saturday 11 August 12 07:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all!!

I am trying to find out what happened to Ishmail Henry Ticehurst. He was born in Ashburnham, Sussex in 1848.

He first appears in the 1851 England census as "Ishmell" aged about 5, (listed as female  ::)) along with his parents, William and Mary, and several siblings.  Resident at Ashburnham.

His next appearance is in the 1861 census as "Ishmael" aged about 14, (this time he's male :) ) again along with parents William and Mary, and several siblings.  Resident at Burwash this time.

The next bit of information I have for him is a record of marriage to either Louisa Annie Barnett or Harriett Parsons in 1873, Hailsham district, Sussex.

After this he/they seem to disappear.  Can anyone shed any light on this for me??

He is also in the 1891 as Henry J, but the image looks like Henry I (it sounds as though he did not like the name Ishmail and simply swapped names - happened quite a lot)  :)

He's also in the 1901 as Henry J with family and grandson, so you have a bit of detective work to find out which daughter he belongs to.

oooo, by 1911 Harriet has died and daur Harriet and grandson are the only family living with him. He has written his middle names as James. Now I am wondering if there are two Ticehursts. Chrislb, you might need that marriage certificate to confirm father's name and Ismail's occupation. He is a plasterer on all censuses.

I have just seen the marriage on Freebmd - surely it must be the same Ishmail/Henry .... :-\ Giving himself the middle name James threw me. I suppose he must have had problems with the name Ishmail ... even as a middle name .....

Just to muddy the waters:

Marriages Jun 1872*

KENT  Harriet    Brighton  2b 350
Owen  Mary Ann     Brighton  2b 350
Pumphrey  James Henry     Brighton  2b 350
TICEHURST  Henry James     Brighton  2b 350

*this fits in nicely with first daur Harriet born in 1873 as per the 1881 census ....

I would advise purchasing the marriage certificate of Ishmail in 1873 to check occupation and father's name. Emigration or death is not out of the question if Ishmail has disappered after his marriage.

I can't see Ishmail in 1871. His family are still in Burwash RG10/1029/42/9.

lol you can see why it's a mistery!!  Thanks for suggestions :)

I've seen that Henry J and wife Harriet in Brighton but am fairly sure it's not them.  Ishmail Henry's dad and brothers were all butchers so it seems likely, although not certain, that he would have been a butcher as well.

Cheers.

I expect you are right and Ishmail was a butcher. You'll need his marriage certificate to know for sure.
