John Davidson Seaman from Stranraer
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 12:10 BST (UK) »
Hoping to find information on our family of seafarers -particularly the names of any ships and voyages for:

John Davidson b 1764 Marnoch a seaman lived at 13 Princess St in Stranraer up to his b death 15th July 1848,
also his son John Davidson b 1794 Stranraer a ships master who lived at 14 Queen St Stranraer and died 8th Nov 1854.

Anyone able to supply links of the harbour with shipping 1800-1850?

Have you come across this database: The Shipping Registers of Stranraer (1824 to 1908) www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/shipping.aspx

A little here on the harbour itself http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/60775/details/stranraer+harbour/

MonicaL, Thanks for these links I had completely forgotten about the Shipping Register site, a quick search revealed a John Davidson as master on a couple of vessels during the right period.

One more thing I had found was this:

Merchant Marine Records

At the Ewart Library, Dumfries:

EGD/97
Schooner 'Isabella' of Stranraer
Papers, 1843-1871, comprising: Log books with details of crew and voyages transporting coal from Troon and potatoes etc to Gloucester and Glasgow; cargo book; book of account of Captain John Davidson, 1843.

MonicaL, thanks again your latest information is just what I was hoping to find.
I will be coming up to visit the Ewart records in the near future.
Many thanks.
