I think you are probably right aghadowey, that's just how family stories work isn't it?

The 1890 child was born in Coothill.

Thanks, Josey

For reference, 1911 census- Patrick's birthplace given as Scotland:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Mountjoy/Summerhill/29039
Youngest daughter born Dublin c1894 which rules out Killeshandra Creamery, I think.

1901 census also shows daughter Mary, now 7, born Dublin:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/North_Dock/Upper_Oriel_Street/1277767
Daughter Kathleen age 10 born Cootehill which mean family probably moved from Cavan to Dublin c1891-c1894.

Yes, Patrick was born in Dundee in 1846 when his father Philip was serving in the 87th RIF.

I forgot that the youngest daughter was born in 1894 in Dublin, sorry. Yes, the Killeshandra Creamery is out and after the analytical process of occupations, I think the likelihood is that he may have worked in a smaller creamery between 1889 & 1894 but certainly not run one! I will send off for the 1890 birth certificate which will give worthwhile information.

Thanks.

I am now a  little stumped - I can only find 2 registrations for birth of a Kathleen Murray 1890 so don't know which to send off for:

[1] Dublin South Jan - Mar 1890 volume: 2 page:   653
[2] Sligo Apr-May-Jun 1890 Volume: 2 Page: 295

and 1 in Limerick in 1891
Apr-May-Jun 1891 Volume:   5 Page: 371

She was 10 on the 1901 census & 20 on the 1911.  As far as I know she had no other name - I always knew her as great aunt Kathleen. What do you suggest? Could she have been born in Cavan but the birth registered in Dublin after they moved if that was shortly after the birth?

Thanks, Josey

I wouldn't restrict your search to just 1890 ... even if the age is accurate (often not the case) then age ten could mean born any time in the preceding 365 days e.g. somewhere between 10 years and 1 day previously, to 10 years and 364 days.

Births were supposed to be registered in the district where the birth took place.

Thanks for that pointer.

I downloaded the baptism record from ifhf.

Catherine Murray born 29 Nov 1890 baptised 12 Dec 1890 father Patrick Murray barber [huh?] mother Mary Holland [correct] informant Anna Stephenson present at the birth Cootehill.

Well, that's a surprise!

that reads like a civil birth record .. rather than a baptism

Yes, and also remember that you've seen a transcription and not the actual entry in the birth register.
