Fuller Baptisms Heacham
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 08:30 BST (UK) »
I am doing research on the Fuller family of Heacham Norfolk. Frederick Fuller b Bishop Stortford 1870 m Edith Frances Briggs b Heacham 1871 in 1890 at Heacham. According to the 1911 census they had 9 children and only 4 are living. It seems that there first 5 children all died at birth. I think there names are William Frederick b 1891-d1891, Dorothy May b1892- d1892,Sybil Elizabeth,b1894-d1894,Olive Elizabeth b1897-d1897 and Katherine Elizabeth b1900-d1900 all come under the Docking Registration district but I cannot prove they are the children of Frederick and Edith. So can someone help with the baptisms of these children please.

Hello Dizziifish

Thank you for replying. I have searched the link you sent me and found the baptism of William Frederick and also the burials of Dorothy May and Kathleen Elizabeth. Also the burial of Edith Francis in 1915 who could be there mother. I know there are 2 families of Fullers in Heacham but they are not related. so I am not sure the children are Frederick and Ediths. Poor Frederick had another piece of bad news his brother John died in 1893 so it was a bad time for him and his wife.

Hi Alan,

Well there's bad news and good news!!!! The bad news is there is a baptism for William Frederick and a Cyril Frederick which i will list in a minute but no baptisms at all for the other 4 girls that died ?? or any others? i went from 1881-1911.
I also looked for the marriage in 1890  i did 2 years either side but couldnt find one?
The Good news is there were no other Fuller entries at all so you mentioned there was another family in Heacham but i saw no evidence of this whilst going through the dates i covered on the bapts, Marr and Burials so i feel you can easily say these 4 girls are yours!!! as i could not see anyone else they could belong to especially regarding the dates.

Details i found are :
Baptisms:
Children of Frederick & Edith Frances Fuller of Heacham. Frederick was a Railway Porter.
William Frederick Bapt 24th May 1891 Born 22 May 1891.

Cyril Frederick Bapt 21 Apr 1899 Born 1 Apr 1899 - ( Parents as above but Frederick is now a Railway Signalman )

No Marriages found 1888 - 1883

Burials : I did 1888-1911

Dorothy May Fuller 10 June 1892 aged 1 Month
Sybill Elizabeth        4 Dec 1894  aged 5 weeks
Olive Elizabeth Victoria  29th May 1897  aged 1 month
Kathleen Elizabeth  4 Dec 1900 aged 12 days

Note - I did'nt see any burial for a William Federick?? in 1891

These are the only details for the Fuller Family in Heacham during the dates i covered. Hope this helps in some way.

Hi Jackie

Thank you for your good work. I think this now proves that these children were the children of Frederick and Edith. After looking at the 1911 census this shows up how life was hard at this time - although it happened all the time but we do not see it on the earlier census's. What a strong family they were to lose your first 5 children and then carry on. What I need to do now is obtain the 5 death certificates and see how they died. The strange thing about William Frederick is that in the BMD's he was registered at birth in July - Sept 1891 and his death was registered in April - June 1891. I can only think that they decided to register him after his death.
I will let you know how these unfortunate children died when I receive the death certifcates.

Once again thank you for your help.

Hi Jackie

I have today received the death certificates of the children and, as promised, here are the details:

William Frederick 1891 (lived for two days). Cause of death: Marasmus -  (hence the birth was registered after the death)
Dorothy May 1892 (lived for twenty eight days). Cause of death: Convulsions 7 days
Sybil Elizabeth 1894 (lived for five weeks). Cause of death: Bronchitis
Olive Elizabeth Victoria 1897 (lived for one month). Cause of death: Marasmus
Kathleen Elizabeth 1900 (lived for twelve days). Cause of death: Convulsions

I was perplexed about the word marasmus and, on Googling it, found it was malnutrition caused by lack of protein. However, both marasmus and convulsions in the young at the time were possibly related to inherited syphillus! Of course, we cannot be certain that this was the case but remembered watching a "Who Do You Think You Are" programme when the subject discovered a similar history of infant mortality to this and the cause could have been inherited syphillus.

Will try to do some more research on this.

Regards
Alan
