British Postal Service App Book - Completed
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 11:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I would like to know if anyone can tell me the place that Arthur J Hankins was assigned to in the Postal service in 1931?

In the image his occupation is listed as SW II and then in the "place" column it states "Engr (Prov)" ?? Is that an abbreviation for an area?

Are you sure about the columns?  The SWII looks more like a location - London, SWII
and the next column looks like occupation - Engineer /Engraver?  Prov ?provisional?

On this page http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=1933&lcid=4105 there is a link to the abbreviations used in the British Postal service books.

The link is under " Family History Guide"

It looks like they swopped his place and situation to where nominated round, and also the chap above him.

I know you've marked this as completed, but having read the guide referred to above I think it worth recording here (for anyone following along later) that the columns do in fact appear to be the right way round, since SW II translates to "Skilled Worker grade 2" and Engr (Prov) is "Engineering Department, Provincial Services" (i.e. not London!).

Cheers!

Thank you to the above for clearing up the issue of SWII, as I had thought it referred to South West II. The question i have is what is LED, London Eastern District or London Engineering Department or something entirely different?
