Bell and Crown Inn, Taplow, Bucks - James Allen
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 12:43 BST (UK) »
For some time now, my cousin and I have been searching for our great grandfather, James Allen, born in Tetsworth, Oxon, in 1830. We think we have now found him in the 1851 Census at the Bell and Crown Inn, Taplow, Bucks, where he is listed as a fly driver, a driver of a one horse lightweight carriage. The birth date (1830) is correct and given that Tetsworth population was only a few hundred in 1830, it seems likely we have the right person, even though he is listed as James Allem.

I think this inn is now called The Dumb Bell, on Bath Road, Taplow. Does anyone know anything more about it or can point me to some old photos of it online?

The licensed victualler in 1851 is James Clare. Does anyone know whether Clare is related to the James Clare, a cyder maker, mentioned in an 1813 newspaper story at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dutillieul/ZOtherPapers/S&WJNov301813.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Best wishes

John

I do believe it was Richard Cleare/Clare(c1845. Burnham), who was the Publican in 1851 census.  So maybe he could be a relative of the fore mentioned James Clare.

I wonder if the present owners/Landlord, would have pre-renovation pictures, or even a few hanging on the walls of the Pub. (Give them a phone call). ;D

But then I could be talking a load of Tripe. ;)

Many thanks, Steve. Will do.

So, you think I am correct in thinking the Bell and Crown Inn on Bath Road, Taplow is now The Dumb Bell?

I can't be sure John, but I guess with them both being on the Bath road, it just could be. :)

I'll flip through the 1851 Census return for Bath Road, and see how many other pubs are in the vicinity. ;)

The only other Pub on that road in 1851, is the 'Orkney Arms', run by William Shindle c1785. Hounslow.   This pub was  near Maidenhead Bridge, Taplow.
