Manchester areas please
« on: Friday 02 July 04 00:15 BST (UK) »
Information on her Australian daughter's birth certificate states that my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Stapleton was born in Manchester around 1840.

This area is totally new to me and would appreciate if someone could list the towns, areas that I might be checking for for Manchester.  Checked out lds site and freebmd but I don't know what I am really looking for.

What area might I be looking for a ship's departure to Aust.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think this is a wonderful site, wish I had more time to spend here -

Chris

Thanks, C hris - bit overwhelming to find one little person .  I found out today that her Sydney marriage, as stated on her daughter's birth cert only by year,  was never registered according to the Registry.  Trying the church - without a date or parents names or specific place - it might take some time.

Guess that's part of the fun  :-\

Hi Chris,

I would have expected Elizabeth to have took the Ship from Liverpool to travel to Australia.

There is the "Saldanha" which sailed in the summer of 1856, but I am sure there are others.

I found a "Stapleton" on this list of SS Great Britain

Chris,

Manchester is a very large City, and Stapleton is quite a common name.  If you can give us the names of her parents, we can proabably find her family on the Census Returns.  This will show which part of Manchester she came from.
