Baptism of Rebecca NEWTON in Langley
« on: Thursday 30 August 12 07:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find a baptism record for Rebecca NEWTON who I believe was born in Langley Derbyshire around 1788.  Don't have any indication of who her parents were.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Is this Langley near Heanor or Kirk Langley nearer Derby.

I'm thinking it was Langley near Heanor.  She married Constantine NEAL in Heanor in 1807.  He was from Morley.

In which case it is Langley Mill...so you should be looking at Heanor Records...or Duffield..........I have the Kirk Langley records..and there is no entry for rebecca burton.

Derek.

It is not necessarily Langley Mill - but more likey Langley -nr Heanor - also nr marlpool. I think at that time Langley Mill only existed as a few houses and was named  "Langley Bridge"

Baptism was possibly Heanor (maybe St Lawrence?) - it would not be Langley Mill as there was no Church at that time .

May have been a non conformist - there were chapels in Langley - one of mine was buried at a nonconformist in Langley - he now lies under the car park!!!!

I can't see why the baptism would be at Duffield - there was a vicar at Duffield who at one time would marry people from Heanor area if their background was a little dubious or if they couldn't afford the fee - but I don't think it was as early as 1780's.

Some of mine who were b in Langley Area were baptised in Eastwood Notts -they walked over the fields to Church in the next county -so maybe you should look in all these areas

1851/61 census Rebecca is consistant with her p.o.b. as Langley Derbys and has a y.o.b. from census as 1851 y.o.b.1788, 1861 y.o.b.1787
There are a lot of trees on A*****y with Rebecca on them -but nothing before her marriage -some of the trees are a little fanciful e.g. one has Constantine's death in Sheffield Berkshire Massachusetts USA !!!!

Hi all

Eastwood is covered on the Notts FHS CD, but no Rebecca Newton I'm afraid.

Thanks everyone for their help.  Derek, did you happen to check for Rebecca NEWTON, rather than BURTON?

Can someone advise what churches were being used for baptisms in the area in 1788?  I gather Heanor St Lawrence wasn't up and running then.
