1841 and 1851 Census look up Ross and Cromarty.
« on: Friday 31 August 12 07:25 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help with census look up for McKenzie family probably at Ross and Cromarty?
I believe the parents to be Donald McKenzie and Ellen /Helen (Urquhart).
A son John was born 1819 Gairloch and I am anticipating there were other Children.
I think Donald was a mail carrier as was son John for a short while before coming to Australia in 1860.A bother was already living here according to the shi's manifest.

The following site speaks of a mail service at Gairloch, mentons McKenzie which must be a common name at that location.

With thanks
Wyatt and Wood of Glossop, Derbyshire. Longstaff of Bishop Auckland,Durham. Harry of St Austell and St Kew,Cornwall. Charters of County Antrim.Knight of Warwickshire.Hendy of Ballyedmonduff.

McKenzie which must be a common name at that location.

That, I think, is a bit of an understatement  ;) According to the census, there were 1402 Mackenzies in the parish of Gairloch in 1841, out of a total of 5675 - that's about a quarter of the population with the same surname.

Have you tried http://www.freecen.org.uk/? Ross and Cromarty is 100% available for 1841, and partly for 1851.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Found on FreeCen:

1851 Census - Pooewe, Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty - ref. SCT1851/66/0/4

John McKenzie   27    Post           b. Gairloch
Christey McKenzie  sister  30            ditto

If this is John his age suggests a birth ca.1823/24 not 1819!!

Thank you Annette
I am going to have to check this further.
I think John McKenzie was born 25 Jul 1819 Gairloch Ross and Cromarty.
He married Free Church of Scotland Gairloch,Catherine Fraser/Frazer from Coulag,Loch Carron.
Unfortunately I am not familiar with the locations.

I think his father was Donald and mother Ellen/Helen Urquhart.
The first children of John and Catherine were Ellen 1856 and Donald 1859 suggesting naming pattern.

I do not know the names of John's siblings,so Christey is possible.
John,Catherine,Ellen and Donald came to Australia 1860.

With thanks
