I will try the Maritime Museum in Sydney to see what they can tell me. Katharine.

According to Wikipedia Egypt was occupied by Britain at the time of your man's death:

Since its establishment Port Said played a significant role in Egyptian history. The British entered Egypt through the city in 1882, starting their occupation of Egypt. In 1936 a treaty was signed between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Egypt called the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936.

You could try asking on one of the other Rootschat boards if anyone knows how to find BMDs for Egypt - Immigrants & Emigrants - General, or Other Countries, perhaps.

There is another forum which seems to have information about BMDs in Egypt at the time.  Beware though - some of the answers seem to be from people who want you to pay them for finding the info.

If he came from Britain, died at Port Said, it may be that the death would be registered in UK 'deaths abroad' if Egypt was occupied by Britain at the time.

Have you checked there?  Under deaths abroad and/or marine deaths?

Hi.  I had sent an enquiry to the GRO regarding deaths at sea, and remember them sending me a reply (which I thought said they couldn't find anything that looked likely in their indexes), but going back through my emails I cannot find the reply. So maybe I have confused it with one of the other emails I received.
In any case, I will have to look at that again.

If anyone has access to that particular index, I would appreciate a lookup.

Katharine.

According to the Maritime Museum Librarian in Sydney, ships logs were only required to be kept for a period of 7 years. She thinks it unlikely that any would have survived for that ship, from that time period. However she is having a look for me - as I already had another ship query for her to investigate.
She did mention that she thinks there are some records for the 'Hobson's Bay' at the National University in Canberra.

I have been following up this query with the NAA. The November voyage does not list Edward Kelly as a death onboard. Therefore it can be concluded that he definately died on land at Port Said.
I have contacted the GRO in England to see if they can help me, but have had no reply. That was about a week ago  :(
