How do I confirm information
« on: Friday 02 July 04 12:44 BST (UK) »
I have found my G Grandfather (Edward Godden b 1846 Oare, Kent), but have no details relating to his parents or other siblings.

The only lead I have is a John Godding who married a Mary Ann SMITH at Oare in 1830. who are shown as the parents of Edwin Godden Christend 1/2/1846 at Luddenham, Kent.

With Oare and Luddenham being next to each other and both very small villages is it safe to assume they are connected. I have searched all the usual sites to find links, but many records for this area are not yet available on line.

What would be the best way/place to look.

Thanks

Has the local Family History Society published the memorial transcriptions for the local cemetery?

Hi Adi1962

With Oare and Luddenham being next door neighbours, it is very safe to say that you have more than likely found the correct ancestors.

You have to remember 1830 was before the days of public transport, (trains were just starting to appear) so most relationships were in the nearest village or within half a days walk etc.

The local library in the nearest town which I think is Faversham will probably have copies of the Church Registers or alternately the Kent Family History Society has probably transcribed and published the registers.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I am a member of the KFHS and I am not aware this has been done. I have put in a request, as yet unanswered.

I heard that "The Hogben Brothers" were/have conducted a survey of the buriels at the 2 Churches, but  have not been able to trace them.

Will contact Faversham library. fingers crossed

Shirley,

Thanks, I have seen this entry and the Godden line in that area, as yet do not seem to be connected.

What I really need is something that will give me Brothers/Sisters or even parents of Edward (Edwin) Godden, as I am almost certain there were some. This would give me the links to the many Godden's in Kent of which a few must be related.

Hi his birth certificate would give his parents details. I'll look the entry up in the St Cath's register on the 16th when I go to the Mormons library.

Shirley,

That would be great, thanks.

This is one of my problems with regard to my G Grandfather, as yet I have failed to find confirmation of his birth. Records show Oare in Kent and Christened in the next village of Luddenham, so you would assume he was born quite local. (These are the only 2 churches for 5 or so miles)
I am hoping that the Faversham FHS can find something for me from their records.

Kent seems to be one black hole with regard to records. Very few have been transcribed and even less are available on the net.

Hi Adrian this is all I could find on the St Cath's register:-

Edward Thomas GODDEN
birth registered at Maidstone V  No? ( illegible) 1846

June qtr 1846

and
male GODDEN  registered at East Ashford Dec qtr 1846   V    1

These are both within the areas you mentioned.

Hope this helps?
