Davenport/Hough Mystery
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 15:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can any body shed any light on who both parents for these people could be?

A Joseph Davenport married a Martha Davenport on the 30th October 1860 in Malpas, Cheshire.
John gave his father's name as John Hough, and this is proved by the 1881 census when John appears with Joseph and Martha, listed as Joseph's father. Born around 1809 in Ravensmoor, Cheshire.
Martha had given her father's name as John Davenport when she married.
Her mother, Mary Davenport, is widowed by 1851 and can be found then with her son, Timothy. Born around 1797 in Bickerton, she can be found in 1871 with Joseph and Martha, listed as Joseph's mother-in-law.
Joseph's mother may have been a Sarah Davenport as she is living close by and is also a stone mason's widow, an occupation Joseph himself held.
There is also a possiblity that Joseph may be with her in 1841. Sarah, born around 1806, is listed with her children, John, Joseph and George Davenport - but no husband is in evidence!

Can anybody shed any light on Joseph's and Martha's parents - could they have been cousins?

Wow that sounds confusing!

Do you mean Joseph Davenport gave his father as John Hough?  If so you would think his mother married again wouldn't you and John Hough was his step father.

And what are they doing with a 3 year old son in 1861 when they married in 1860  ???

Hi,

Samuel was Martha's son. On his baptism only her name is given.
I strongly suspect that they may have been related.
Martha's parents were John Davenport and Mary Brown who married on the 5th February 1817. Strangely they had a son, Joshua, born around the same time as Joseph, surely they can't be one of the same?

Right I see about Samuel thanks but the rest of it is very  ???

There is a tree naming Josephs wife as Martha Hough but I can see from the marriage index it is Martha Davenport so the Hough name is a mystery.

John Hough doesn't seem to pop up anywhere else but there must be a link somehow.
