Everything fits except for the Baptism date. Could this be an adult baptism? Or a different person?

Derby Mercury 29 Sep 1785
"The ships employed in the above Trade (ie. the King George Sound scheme), are called the King George and Queen Charlotte; they are the property of Mr Wm Etches and his three sons, Wine Merchant at Ashbourne. -They sailed from Portsmouth the 14th of last month".

Did Richard go to London initially as part of extending the wine business?

regards

Hi,

A further search of the St. Andrew, Holbourn register shows:-

1st October 1797

Thomas Daniel son of William and Mary Etches - Holborn Hill.

Think that the entries for Richard Cadman & William Daniel indicate that these actual Christenings  when children
were YOUNG, so suggests this is the wrong Richard Cadman.

Thanks for this. I've ordered a copy of the book and hope that this will reveal the details that I'm after.

"John Latham of Cheshire, 10 Sep 1858, married Mary Etches, of Ashbourne, a near relative of Mr Richard Cadman Etches, original memoirs of whom appear in the History of Ashborne, published by Messrs Dawson and Hobson, of that place"

Might be worth trying to find a copy (unless already done so). Have googled and found it's possibly still available?

"Wm Etches and his three sons"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_George's_Sound_Company

suggests the three sons were Richard Cadman Etches (of London in 1785), John Etches (merchant of London) and William Etches (merchant of Northampton).

I have been researching Richard Cadman Etches. What is it you want to know?

Thanks, I hope that you can help me. I'm more interested in his private life than his career as I'm trying to find out if he is a distant ancestor of mine:

1. I think he had a brother William ( 1760-1839). Did he marry a Mary Clifford (1766-1788) and did they have a son Thomas (1786-1819) who married Elizabeth Heaton ?

2. Presumably this William was the merchant of Ashbourne who became a partner in The King George's Sound Company bur what relation was William of Etches, merchant of Northampton?

3. There was once a bust of a John Etches at St. Mary's Gate, Derby. A one armed man, I believe. Was this Richard's brother ?

4. Was was the significance of the name Cadman ? Was it just Richard's unusual second name or was it a family name ?

5.What was Richard's mother's name?

6. Was there a sister, Elizabeth ?

7. Did Richard ever marry ?

8. Finally, despite Richard's professional success he seems to have been a resident of Fleet Prison at the time of his death. Why was this?
