Mark maker?
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 20:55 BST (UK) »
Despite checking every 'old occupation' website I could find, I haven't been able to find the occupation 'Mark maker'.  Any suggestions?

When and where was this?  It might help if we could tie it to a particular area or industry.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Looking at those people recorded as "Mark Makers" on various census entries - all the ones I have located appear to work with Steel or Silver - often combined with another occupation "Cutter".

I'm suspecting that the "Mark Maker" was responsible for ensuring the quality stamps (e.g. purity/quality of silver - where made etc) were made on any finished pieces. The "Made in Sheffield", "EPNS" type stamps you would find on Sheffield manufactured cutlery etc

Well he was living in Sheffield, so that explanation fits right in!  One can then make the assumption he was working in the steel/silver industry?

Thanks for the explanation, as you can imagine to my mind, mark maker could be just about anything.
