Help to trace William Thomson, Mary Aitken

I am trying to find the births and deaths of William and Mary.  I have a marriage date of 31/5/1798.  They are the parents of Elizabeth Thomson born 1/2/1800.  There is a dc on SP but it does not record wife's name so am not sure if this is the right one.  Age given as 87, occupation porter, widower.  On the 1851 census there record of

William Thomson    H     W  M  79  Cooper Journeyman  East Lothian - Preston
Margaret Thomson  Dau U   F   45  Dressmaker              Midlothian - South Leith

William and Mary had a daughter Margaret born 1803

so a possible match?

Any help on either will be appreciated.

Hi Sandra,

On family search, doing a parent search on William Thomson and Mary Aitken, it returned two daughters, Elizabeth born 1 Feb 1800 c 16 Feb 1800 and Margaret 12 Jul 1803 c 24 Jul 1803, both at Uphall, West Lothian. So it doesn't match with your 1851 census find.

Maybe have to try and find Elizabeth and Margaret's marriage, which I did  search ans was unable to confirm any, but good luck with your search.

I can see from your query that you're trying to go backwards rather than forwards, so this info may not tell you anything new, however, there is a tree on Ancestry that includes Elizabeth Thomson, born 1801 in Uphall, father: William Thomson, mother not stated.  This Elizabeth married William Stevenson in 1826 and lived in Tranent, East Lothian.

Scotlands People have her death cert: Elizabeth Stevenson born 1801; maiden name Thomson; mother's maiden name, Aitken, died 1861, Tranent.

Hi All,

Good find, Br1gau, Elizabeth must have died after 1861 census, as FreeCen has her with husband, William and Family at Portobello (Mains), Tranent. She was born in Uphall and is aged 60. Husband William is 61 and a ploughman.
