Thank you Bob for pinpointing that, it is difficult to find names if you don't know the areas and wild guesses are not good enough.

Those poor people having to constantly move, uproot and resettle, hard enough to make a living without it constantly being eroded.

This has been an enlightening journey of discovery.

I've mentioned place name changes in another topic, in another context:

Some families lived in the same house in the same location for several generations.

According to the who "owned" the country at the time, they could have been living in many "different" places in as many different countries, all without moving a step out of the door.

Some place names sounded similar in all languages:
i.e. my grandfather, Hans Margulies, was born in

- Sosnowice (polish)
- Sosnowitz (german)

but my great-uncle, Joseph Remenyi, was born in

- Bratislava, formerly Prešporok  (slovakian)
- Poszony    (hungarian)
- Pressburg  (german)

www.jewishgen.org has a very good town locator using all sorts of "sounds like" searches.  It then shows you all the names the town has been known by, and what the county and ruling state was called over three time periods.  Very useful!

I think you can search it without being a member, but it costs nothing to join.
