Baptism for Elizabeth JAMES Charlton Wilts
« on: Friday 07 September 12 20:53 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help find a baptism for Elizabeth James b 1826-1835 Charlton Wiltshire

On her 2 marriage certificates and death certificate, birth year would indicate a birth date of 1835.

However I have found her on the 1851 census as a 24 year old in service at Quennington Gloucs. As this is the birthplace of her husband I believe I have the correct person.

Her marriage certificates indicate that her father is Robert James, farmer.

Thank you

She is not with what appears to be her family in the 1841, which if she had been born in 1835 you would perhaps expect her to be.  Of course this may not be them... Charlton Common, Charlton HO107/1181
Robert James 41. Agricultural Labourer
Mary James 40. Wife
Harriet James. 12
George James. 10
Caroline James. 8
Ann James. 6
William James. 3
(All born in County)
When did Elizabeth marry? and who to?   any other information/details that you have that may help to trace her would be a great help

Thank you for your interest.

She married George Goodall of Quenington Gloucs at Quenington 15/8/1855 His father is James and her father Robert. Listed as living in Charlton nr Malmsbury.

The census returns during her marriage indicate a birth date similar to her husband. She had one child born in 1857

Just double checked 1861 census indicate 1830, 2 years younger than husband.

Her later marriage in 1875 lists her age as 39, which was significantly older than her groom, and her death in 1877 as age 42. She did not make old bones, so that is no clue to prove/disprove an earlier date of birth.  PS death due to fatty liver.

It is difficult with the 1841 census due to lack of information but I did find a possible Elizabeth in service age 15. I could not find any in the Wiltshire area that could be with grandparents.

Her marriage cert on second marriage hold no clues re witnesses

It looks like her age is pretty certain given her marriage and death certificate and I can see them in the 1861 census RG9/3705/F68 10 Grange Street, Bishop Auckland Durham.
George 33 - County Constable. b. Quenington Glos
Elizabeth  31 Wife - b. Charlton Wilts
John 4 b. Marske Yorkshire

Hmm.. a bit of mystery.  It is hard to place Elizabeth in the 1841 as it looks like she may well be employed and as  you have probably also seen there are number of possibilities for her  :-\

I'm sorry that I have not managed to be more helpful.

Thank you for trying.

Yes 1841 is difficult to search if uncertain of facts. I am not certain that she was truthful re age on second marriage, she was a lot older than the groom and he either put a few years onto his age for this marriage or took a few off for his others.

Just thought I would update this (for search engines) as have now found her baptism.... she was baptised in 1824, parents Robert and Mary (as per census record Captain found). She really did shed the years in later life and told a few porkies on the way.
