This is from the St Helier Town Church records

8/9/1841
William Rowe, aged 26 of St Judes Cornwall, son of Richard to Ann West (no age given) of Cheddar, Somerset, daughter of Henry.

I could not find a marriage between James Selwood and (Mary) Ann West/Rowe but I did find the birth reference for Elizabeth Ann Sellwood so I will go and look at the certificate later this week and that should give the mother's name and maiden name.

What great service  :) That ties in perfectly and it is always good to get confirmation from the Church records.
What part of NZ do you live in? I am in the BOP.
Once again please thank the looker up of records for me it is appreciated
Regards
Paul

I am the looker up of records and I live in Jersey, the respondent who lives in NZ calls him/herself 'Alderney'.

Bay of Plenty is a beautiful part of the world, we drove round the East Cape a couple of years ago and had a great time.

I'll post again when I've looked up the birth of Elizabeth Selwood.

I'm sorry to have mixed up the two respondents.
I retired to Katikati after living in Hamilton and being on the coast is great.
I would love to go to the Channel Islands as I have been to most parts of England but it is rather unlikely now.
Paul

I have now found the marriage of James Sellwood and Ann West.

St Helier Town Church - 6th June 1846

James Sellwood, aged 38, bachelor, occupation Maltster, living in St Helier, born in Redruth Cornwall. Father Thomas Sellwood - Weaver
Ann West, aged 26, widow of William Rowe, living in St Helier, born in Cheddar Somerset. Father Robert West - Carpenter.

They both made their marks and unfortunately the signatures of the witnesses are illegible but do not appear to be family members.

Ann doesn't seem too sure of the name of her father, Henry on her 1st marriage, so maybe she was illegitimate.

Thank you once again. You must know your way around the records office! I certainly did not expect a reply so soon.
I don't think Mary Ann was illegitimate as she is the second born and her father Henry was a carpenter.
In any case the info has helped greatly to better understand what went on in the life of my 2x great grandmother.
Have you any ideas about the brewery in St Helier that James Selwood and William Rowe worked in? As I understand it beer was very commonly drunk in the 1800s.
Thank you for your assistance
Paul
