A few more details about Thomas might help to find this marriage for you.

When and where was he born? Where do you think the marriage was held?

Whoops sorry  ;D seniors moment.
Thomas born abt 1841 Ardsley to parents William and Mary Harper, bap 02 Jul at Ardsley. Had three daughters Mary Ann 1863-1931, Laura 1868 and Emily 1869, all at Ardsley. 1871 Census is at Ardsley with a wife (Martha) then in the 1881 is back with his parents with the three girls..no wife...and cannot find him after the 1881..as I said record on Anc**** for 1862 has no wife's name recorded...have tried IGI and also BMD but nothing doing.
Where to go from here  ::)
Thank you..Patvp

FreeBMD has a marriage of a Thomas HARPER in Barnsley RD in Jul-Sep 1862 and of another man on the same page of the same marriage register but only one bride's name is given - Ann BROADHEAD.  It is possible that the other bride's name has not been transcribed for some reason, and that is probably why it is not given on Ancestry either.  This missing bride may well be Martha.  One possibility would be to look at the Ardsley marriage register for that period.

Hi the reason that Thomas is back home in 1881, and possibly confirms the first name of his wife, is this death:-

Martha Harper Sept qtr 1880 Barnsley 9c 132 aged 37 which compares favourably with her age in the 1871 census, the other way of course to ascertain her maiden name is to purchase one of the childrens birth certs?

The only other query I would have with the marriage in 1862 it seems a great distance away from the births of the children in 1871, maybe a few died young to explain that, or Thomas was away on military duties.

Patyp,

You can order a copy of the register entry for Thomas HARPER and Martha WILKINSON from the General Register Office website.  Click on 'Certificate Ordering Service.'

Alternatively, ask your nearest Family History Centre to obtain a copy of the Ardsley, marriage register for the relevant period.  On the FamilySearch website click on 'FamilySearch Centers' on top menu to find details of your local centre/center.

Be sure to specify Christ Church, Ardsley to distinguish it from East Ardsley and West Ardsley a few miles north of it.

The register copy will give exact date of marriage, fathers' names and occupations, and witnesses' names as well as details of bride and groom.

Sam.
