Sir Harry's Road, Edgbaston
« on: Wednesday 12 September 12 12:47 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate Beech Hill on Sir Harry's Road, Edgbaston on Street View, but I am not having much success. Please is there anyone with local knowledge who can help me?
I have located it in the Kelly's Directory for 1895:

Sir Harry’s Rd. Edgbaston, Pershore Road to Ampton Road.

Partridge Charles Bollinbrook (Wishanger)
Dawson Mrs. (Sunnyside)
Short William Dudley (Hemlingford)
Macgregor Angus (Erin Lodge)
….here is Bristol Rd…..
6 Croft Mrs.
7 Wilkinson  Arthur
8 White Wiliam (alderman)
9 Hawkes William Collis
10 Stokes Misses
12 Wood Henry
     Nettlefold Mrs. (Hallfield)
….here is Wellington Rd…..
Rogers Hallewell (councillor) (Greville lodge)
Gibbins William (Beech Hill)
Walsh Theodore Jackson (councillor) (The Shrubbery)
Coxon Mrs. (Southfield)

Six Ways, Smethwick

This should make it easy, but although I can find the street names I cannot identify the individual houses. Any help will be gratefully accepted.

It's roughly opposite Edgbaston cricket ground.
Edit:OK it's the house not the road you're looking for.

I've been playing around with the small maps on the old maps site plus modern satellite photos and although I have now found Beech Hill at the turn of the century I suspect that it has been demolished and replaced by modern housing. Greville Drive appears to be built on the site. Please can anyone confirm this?

OK well from what you've put Beech Hill was in Wellington Rd. not Sir Harry's.There's a Greville House there at no.45 which is probably Greville Lodge so I would think the one you're looking for is no.44 next door, the house with the island lawn in the front.
The 1st. house is called Hedingham which has been missed out on the census.
jim
No.47 is called Beech M? so it could be that one.

The 1904 OS map shows houses named: Beechfield, Beech Mount and Beech Hill in close proximity. I would think that Beech M would be Beech Mount. The location of Beech Hill on the map matches the location indicated in Kelly's Directory.
Beechfield is to the west of Hallfield (which I think became a convent and is now Priory School) and Beech Mount is definitely on Wellington Road (to the north of the road, opposite Greville Lodge.

Just looked at my 1898 map which shows just 1 property Priory school at the junction with Ampton & Wellington Rd.According to Kelly's 1895 there should be 4 more properties beyond that but there isn't.What there is are 8 properties in the square formed by Sir Harry's Rd,Church Rd,Ampton Rd. & Arthur Rd.That part of the road that runs between Sir Harry's Rd. & Priory Rd. is unnamed on my map,on a current map half is part of Priory Rd. & the other part of Sir Harry's.It could be that some of these 8 properties were given as being in Sir Harry's Rd.

1890 Birmingham street map       http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.aspx?compid=55193

Click on link. Tab down to display "Harborne"
Place cursor on square 2nd from right, 2nd up (013/12 Warwickshire (1890) should appear) and click on
Place cursor just above the "W" in "Harborne Ward" - bottom right of screen and click on
Place cursor at top of screen at the mid point and click on
With luck, Beech Hill, Greville Lodge, Beech Mount etc should appear
If not place cursor at midpoint, top of screen again and click on

Bit convoluted but regards

I've overlaid Hanes Teulu's map with a current view which gives Beech Hill's location today.
It isn't where Kelly's said it was.
