I am delighted to find this post as my Mum's family were in Elkesley.  Larkspur, I wonder if you can find any records for me please?  My grandmother died when Mum was only 5, so that would have been about 1927 - she was Flora Thorpe.  I think her parents, John William and Maria Elizabeth Thorpe died about 1928 and 1934.

JW & Maria had about 14 children between 1882 and 1906.  They are in Elkesley in 1911, but not 1901, so may have moved there to be with other family?  Mum remembers as a young girl, taking tea out to the workers, presumably on one of the farms mentioned above.

Any information would be appreciated.  Mum is now 91 and it would be great to find out more.  As she was only 5, she doesn't really know a lot about the Thorpes as she and her sister moved away with my granddad to live with his relatives.

Thanks for that information.  Are there any records available online?

Copperbeech - do you know where I could purchase a copy of the book.  I did look on Amazon but it was unavailable.

Thankyou both for the links.  I ordered from Nottingham Books on Tuesday evening and it arrived this morning.  Amazing service!  I also ordered a book of old picture postcards for Netherfield and Colwick as my great grandfather (pictured) worked on the railway there and I am hoping to learn a bit more about that area too.

I can't believe there is a reference to my family in the book!!  On pages 105/6 he refers to the Thorpe family in the Great War.  "with four lads in khaki, theirs was the biggest contribution from any single family in Elkesley"  These were my Mum's uncles.  He also mentions a family grave, so I may have to brave the A1 and pay a visit!

Thanks again for putting me onto this book.

There are 2 Rollitt male Marriages at Elkesley, St Giles
22-11-1762 William Rollitt and Mary Wood
19-9-1771 William Rollitt and Elizabeth Shaw.
3 female marriages
8-12-1812 Thomas Watts and Mary Rollitt
7-5-1839 Joseph George Goacher and Sarah Rollitt
26-6-1845 John Moore and Frances ROLLETT

5 Burials same church.
26-6-1824 Christiana Rollitt age 21
5-12-1826 Jane Rollitt age 15
17-10-1832 Mary ROLLETT age 34
17-1-1842 Benjamin ROLLETT age 75
12-1-1860 Mary ROLLETT age 89
The link earlier in this thread doesn't work for me.

I would love to look in the Elkesley parish registers - I know my direct Rollitt ancestors lived there from at least the 1740s until about 1840. Before that I think they lived in Caunton and possibly Edwinstow before that.

Hi, it is interesting to find others researching the Rollett (Rollitt) line from Elkesley as this is also my direct paternal line. Like you I have presumed that William's father is Benjamin born in Caunton 1706 and who married Mary Kilingar in Fledborough.  This connection has been made due to some incomplete research which was carried out by a deceased family member on the ground in Notts some years ago and that had recorded Mary's surname as Kilingham not Kilingar. Output from this research is patchy and documentary evidence  is not available but the Kilingham & Kilingar link appears to be too strong to ignore.

I have also assumed, on the basis of what is most likely, that:

1)  Benjamin's parents were Joshua Rollett born abt 1673 in Edwinstowe and Deborah Hancock maried 1695 in South Muskham

2) Joshua's Parents were William Rollit born abt 1635 in Edwinstowe and Elizabeth Clarke married 1656 in Edwinstowe.

3. William's father was Robert Rollett born 1602 in Edwinstowe and I have courtesy of another parties reasearch a wife for Robert named as Alice (Ales). there is also a baptism of an Ellen in 1632 in Edwinstowe with Robte (Robert) and Alice named as the parents. However I have not been able to find a baptism for William so I am a little concerned that I have presumed too much.

Any clarity, comments or other points of interest that can be added around my presumptions would be of enormous interest.
