Leeds, St Peter (Leeds Parish Church), Hugh Strickland
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 17:25 BST (UK) »
Hugh Strickland was born abt. 1600. He married Alice Huin in 1629 and had 3 daughters, Isabel, Mary and Ellin.  He also had 2 sons John and Thomas. Their births ranged between 1624 to 1649.

I am searching for Hugh's parents or at least his father but have come up with nothing.  Given first sons were named after a father or grandfather, I have searched John until I'm blue.  I also searched the name Thomas, nothing.  Records that far back are hard to find.  I am not sure if they are in some way related to the Strickland's in Westmorland.

Any information on his parents would really help.

Just looking to see if I could give you the link for St Peter's BMD records online?
Found Harewood and Rothwell (Volume 50/34 respectively) here:

 See how you get on.

Hi there

Just wondered if this is 'Hugh'

At St Peters, Leeds
Mathew Strickland christened 4th January 1600
Father is Abraham.

If you pronounce the end of Math hew could be him with his name shortened

Looked at all the year 1600 births for St Peters and he is the only Strickland registered

2nd July 1601 burial of Abraham Strickland

Unforuntately no age so could be the Father of Mathew (Hugh)

Hi all
Yes, the name is Hugh.  I thought it might be a middle name or as suggested a shortened name spelled different.
I have looked at actual copies of the registers and the name is Hugh on each.  I'm not sure if they could get away with using a different name on a marriage registration???  I belong to Ancestry.com and all of their records show it the same way.  Let me tell you, whomever got the job of transcribing a few of them really had their work cut out for them.  I have 1 record that I actually had to blow up to see if it was actually who I was looking for.

Brian; Thanks for that link looking through all of that should keep me busy for awhile.  I don't suppose there is anyway to do a search and get a smaller list??

If Abraham died 1601 he would have died just about the time Hugh was born.  Maybe that's what killed him ;D

Sitha!!!

Coming from Leeds and able to speak broad Yorkshire if I want to.
Believe me you can shorten any word and with a thick accent even
your name.   I know what you mean about the writing on the Parish
records, you need to have a telescope to read some of it.
With the scribe the only one who could read or write he could put
anything and Mathew or Hugh would not tell him he was wrong.
Having looked at Parish records over all of the centuaries we can do,
you have to take strong accents into your understanding of names,
spelling mistakes and the written records.
Hope you get your man.
I would say that there seems only to be about 3 Strickland men having
children baptised at St Peters around the years of Hughs birth in 1600.
There is Abraham, Lawrence and Steel
If you find out it is Abraham who is Hughs Father his wife was called
Elizabeth Richardson.
