"Above" In The 1841 Census
« on: Monday 17 September 12 11:06 BST (UK) »
I've been looking at possible relatives in the 1841 Census and noticed that above the ages of some people is the word "above".What exactly would this mean?

A guess:
The age is rounded down rather than rounded up? So the person would be older than is written on the census?  :-\

Ages in the 1841 Census were rounded down.
1841 Census.
0-14 had the correct age listed
15-19 were listed as 15
20-24 were listed as 20
25-29 were listed as 25
30-34 were listed as 30
and so on,  although some enumerators show the exact age. So I assume above means they were above 20, 25, 30 etec.

Older than?   i.e. above the age of consent - over 21

On the 1841 census the enumerator was supposed to round up or down with ages

so someone between the ages of 40-45could be shown as 40 (rounding down) - but some 45-50 could be shown as 45 or 50 (rounding up).

Some enumerators stuck to this rule rigidly, the reason being that many people in rural areas or poorer parts of towns and cities may not have known their true age.

However, I have found only one in my tree and all the other ages declared are correct.  My 3x g/gran her age varied on all census' by 11 years, and only remained accurate once her husband had died, it turned out she was about 10 years old than him and tried to hide it!

Strangely, on that image, there is only one other entry, for an Anne Williams, above 20, but not for any others.

Thanks Stan, yes I did see it alongside Anne Williams's age.

The point of all this of course is finding a suitable baptism for this William from the Chirk Parish Registers(Baptisms) booklet I have transcribed by Clwyd FHS.Looking again now I'm tentatively looking at a baptism of a William Jones in 1822 to parents John and Sarah Jones.
