Re: Taggart - Londonderry
« on: Monday 17 September 12 14:55 BST (UK) »

I am trying to trace this Taggart family from Londonderry.

From the 1911 Census I have the following information:
Quote
1911 Census of Ireland (Co Derry,Tamnaherin, Oughtagh)
James Taggart aged 48, Ag Lab,
Carline Taggart wife, aged 50, Married 26 yrs, 8 children born and 8 living
Emma Taggart dau, aged 14, Scholar
Tomas Taggart son, aged 10, Scholar
William Taggart son, aged 5, Scholar

All born Co Derry, Church of Ireland

Another of the siblings was:
Caroline Taggart  aged 16, who was a servant in the Christie household
at Gortnaran, Bondsglen

From the above information it has raised the following questions:

1. Where and when was James and Carline/Caroline born? (James abt 1863, Carline/Caroline abt 1861)
2. Where and when was James and Carline/Caroline married? abt 1885
3. What are the names/details of the four eldest children?

If anyone is able to provide further details or where I can get the information , I shall be eternally grateful.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Same family in 1901 which gives you a few more children:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Bondsglen/Gortnaskey/1527307

Possibly church records would show details of all the children.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
This may point to the church. In 1921 Emma Taggart married William Doherty in Glendermott Church of Ireland, Londonderry.

I can't find a marriage for a James Taggart to Caroline Cunningham and it has to be said that the name Caroline Cunningham isn't plentiful on the ground.

The 1911 census suggests a marriage around 1885, the earliest child so far seems to be Margaret Anne Taggart in 1889. At the time of Margaret Anne's birth, the family lived in the townland of Listress in the parish of Cumber Lower, Co. Londonderry.  The only marriage of a Caroline Cunningham around the time in question that I can see so far is in 1886 in Donagheady CoI to a James Harran from the townland of Castlewarren in the parish of Donaghedy. The detail can be found here:

http://www.breadyancestry.com/index.php?id=churchrecords

Civil registration records on familysearch confirm the marriage, but the husband's surname is Hassan.

On the map, Cumber Lower and Donaghedy are cheek by jowl, in the area of Dunnamannagh to Claudy, right on the Tyrone / Londonderry county border.

Pushing the limits of credibility I know, but does anyone else have any thoughts on how likely is it that both church record and civil registration are some sort of horrible mistranscription of the husband's surname?
