St Matthews Church, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 08:57 BST (UK) »
I'm transcribing some Baptism Records circa 1892 for St. Matthews and I'd like to know where it is/was situated.   Some of the street addresses include, Latimer St., Athol St., Vauxhall Road., Boundary St., and St Martins St. which suggest an area between Scotland Road and the Docks but I cant find a St Matthews................anyone any ideas?

According to this 1901 A-Z Street Map, St Matthews was a C of E church and was located between Silvester Street and Blenheim Street. See grid ref K9 http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/liverpoolaz/km79.htm
Although the mouse hover function doesn't work for me, if you scroll down the page it gives the names of religious establishments in red.
Only just heard of this church through a Facebook group posting a picture and as I eas brought up in the area googled for more info and found this thread. I've had the old street map for a while and have found it very useful, hope you find it helpful also if you weren't aware of it before  :)

Thanks Jacky and Welcome to the Site.
It's nice to what the old church looked like.

Hi

I'm new to these pages, however I need to say that using the very useful Church locator map I found St Matthews on the corner of Scotland Road and Wilbraham Street, not where the person above (sorry, can't see your name now) said.  Here's a snip of the 1890 town plan (from Digimap) which shows the church name.

Moderator comment: sorry, but digimap images are copyright and should not be republished here.  Image removed.

If you look at this - St Matthews is indeed on the corner of Scotland Road and Wilbraham Street ...and backs on to Wilbraham Place
the church between Sylvester St and Blenheim street is St Martins ...the next one listed

http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/liverpoolaz/streets.htm#W  streets beginning with W ...look for Wilbraham Street

However, there was another St Matthews in Toxteth Park on Hill Street, founded in 1839 closed in 1931.
