Irving C Wright - Irving was the son of George Wright, an American baseball pioneer and one of the founders of the Wright & Ditson sporting goods firm and the brother of U.S. Championship winner and Olympic gold medalist Beals Wright. Together they won the men's doubles title at the Canadian Tennis Championship four times (1902, 1903, 1904, 1905)

Irving Christman Wright  - Birth Date: 13 May 1882 Boston
Father Name: George Wright and Mother Abbie A

Irving, wife Lillian and children appear on census 1920/30/40 (the links were playing up earlier so haven't put them on individually today)

In this article in The New York Times.  August 24, 1910. E H Whitney was 19 years of age so born 1891 - first clue  ;)

Accident saved Wright in Tennis -  Youthful E.H. Whitney Was Leading Veteran in Match When He Injured a Leg. Newport. Rhode Island -  August 23 rd 1910  -- But for an accident to his opponent, Beals C. Wright would have been eliminated from the Thirtieth All Comers National Lawn Tennis championship. tournament to-day in the semi-final round. E.H. Whitney, 19 years of age, played his famous opponent to a standstill, while a great crowd stood breathlessly amazed about the court within the picturesque Casino inclosure

Hi, Sandra,

I think I had a different Edward Whitney in mind; in fact, I might have been on the wrong track because I was really thinking of some early players from the west coast of the United States, in particular California. One of these was George F. Whitney, several times champion at the early Pacific Coast Championships; I'm quite he sure wasn't related to Edward H. Whitney, or at least wasn't his brother.

Some of the other early Pacific Coast singles champions were the following:

Thomas A. Driscoll
--

Louis R. Freeman
--

George C. Janes
--

John Drummond MacGavin
--

William H. Taylor
--

Charles R. Yates
-----

As I've indicated, most of the above players were probably born in or near California. I know virtually nothing about them.

Regards

Mark
