It has been pointed out to me that there seems to be a discrepancy with my grandfathers dates. As i previously said my grandfather died in 1939 aged 50 ( i have the death cert). however on his marriage cert it says that he married in 1923 aged 26!!!. Curiouser and curiouser.

He's not getting any easier :o

Is there any "family lore" about him which might contain a crucial clue - e.g. that he spoke with a non-local accent, served in WW1 etc - anything at all?

Its possible he took a few years off when he married, especially if his wife was quite a bit younger than he was.

Can you give the names of the witnesses please?

I hope Mick won't mind if I post the info he has sent me by PM so that everyone can benefit:

The bridegroom was a batchelor aged 26 with his occupation listed as "car driver".
I can only make out the name of one of the witnesses and that is Joseph Bumby.
The marriage took place at St Pauls church Marton, Lancashire.

I can only decipher one of the witness names and it is Joseph Bumby. Is it possible that my granfather was adopted? My mother seems to recall being told off her mother that he spoke with a slight accent but was not told where he originated from.

A Joseph Bumby m. Alice Cardwell in 1919 in Fylde district, so that witness was probably his brother in law.

If you can scan the document in, you can post the section of the marriage certificate with the witness names (please don't post the whole thing) so that we could try to decipher it.

Hi all, still been trying to find out more about my grandfather without much success. I have been trying to get hold of a scanner to post the name online that i cant decipher. I was just wondering if anyone has managed to uncover anything that i have obviosly missed? I must admit, having struggled with this for nearly 10 months i am getting a bit disheartened.

Don't give up Mick!  Never give up!!  New info hits the net all the time and new people get on the boards.

However, you may put it to one side occasionally....that's not giving up!   ;D
