trying to trace ggg grandfather
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone my name is Alastair Stewart and i'm trying to locate any information about John Stewart born in 1792 in Tramore Waterford. I am trying to find his birth details and his parents and siblings if any, but I really don't know where to start and I was wondering if anyone could help or point me in the right direction.

i do know that when he was 14 he joined the 88th foot connaught rangers but was underage but went on to serve with them untill his volutary distage in Corfu

I hope to here from you if you are able to help.

Kind reagrds Alastair

Hi very difficult for birth year 1792 unless you have name of parish. What denomination was John?  Civil registration was introduced in Ireland in 1864.
Did John remain in Ireland? There are some deaths in Waterford for John Stewart. :)
You could take a look at www.waterfordcountylibrary.ie  which has a burial database searchable online.
Also www.rootsireland.ie which is a pay site which covers waterford and there are quiet a few records on here for Stewart.
Good luck

Hi he did not return to Ireland but settled in Edinburgh where he died. I have been able to trace him and know he had two son's Thomas and John. That side of it is fine I just hit brick walls when I try and trace his bith and parents. I know he was not Catholic and know he was born in Tramore from his service records.
does that help at all ?
kind regards Alastair

Alastair take a look at www.waterford-heritage.ie  they hold church of ireland records, as well as various other records going back to 1655. They have records for Tramore 1785-1798 baptism/marriage register.

Also www.rootsireland.ie  have several Stewart records Baptisms for John Stewart 1772, 1804, 1818 and numerous marriage records back to 1749 but I am not sure if they are RC or CoI.  This is a pay site.

Regards :)

I know you can get military records at Kew in London, not sure if the year of his enlistment is covered, think the site is www.governmentarchives.co.uk but you would need to check
