"LINTON" FAMILY did they come from Down???
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 07:47 BST (UK) »
Hello Friends,

Can anyone please help me?

I am trying to locate a "WILLIAM LINTON" who may of originally came form Down.

His children were JOHN b c 1816, WALSH b c1818, MARY JANE b c1822 and ELIZABETH b c1829.

It said on the shipping records that WALSH LINTON came from ARMAGH, but I am unable to find any birth or any information on his father WILLIAM.

I found out through 'Irish Ancestors', that there were more LINTON'S in Down than anywhere else and since Armagh is next door to Down I thought it was worth a slim chance.

If anyone could help me find this LINTON family or give me some help in any other way, I would be very appreciative.

Kind Regards

children
from Tasmania

Hi both,
I have an ancestor Ann LINTON who hailed from Derry around 1800.  I have a little bit of information about the family but not much, and only from the Derry region.  It took a long time to find out anything at all, so I'm happy to share with you what I have.  If you would like  this, please let me know and I'll PM or email it to you.

Ann married Richard BALFOUR, ex-Royal Scots soldier and Waterloo veteran, and they came out to Australia in the early 1830s.

There is a Walsh Linton measured in this link

http://www.asaz58.dsl.pipex.com/brad.htm

...in 1820 for Armagh city. I would stay with Armagh for the time being if that is what the shipping records state, it is unlikely that he would have mixed it up with Down. This Walsh Linton may be a bit too old for your's but is is an usual name combination so there may be a connection. Remember spelling variants, the surname may also have been recorded as Lin[d] e/o n.

Hi MacCailein,

Thankyou very much in finding the information on Walsh Linton for me. I do not know as yet if there is a connection but like you said, 'it is unusual name'.

I also appreciate the  guidance and help that you have offer about the variant name spelling, as I hadn't taken that into consideration.

Thankyou once again for all your help and time.

Kind regards

Wendy
