It shows how useful it is to share information, I think. I would never have been able to tie up those loose ends with the Newcombs unless you'd told me about the Tolleshunt Knights baptisms!

Just been rooting through the register for Tolleshunt Knights. I think I've found Thomas jnr's burial, 11 Apr 1753 (the date would make sense with the other data we have). There's two Samuel Newcombes buried in T. Knights before then who are presumably related to Thomas jnr - 21 Mar 1739/40 (affidavit of Elizth Cooke) and 01 Oct 1749.

Joseph b. 1750 seems to be father of this child, baptised 16 May 1784 in T. Knights - James, son of Joseph & Mary Newcombe.

Then there's burials:
04 Nov 1804: Mary Newcomb
29 Jan 1809: James Newcomb

There's baptisms in 1820 and 1830 for Wm and Eliz Newcomb's children (they seemed to get them baptised in 10-yearly batches!). They are on the 1841 census.

I would suppose that Joseph and Mary had children baptised in another parish?

Can't see any Newcomb marriages in T. Knights.

Looks as if you have found Thomas jun. :)

Those two Samuel Newcombe burials are interesting. Does it say whether they were adults or infants?

Nothing at all, unfortunately! Could be an uncle and cousin of Thomas jnr maybe? Uncle and grandfather? (just wondering that given that Thomas senr named his son/s Samuel as well).

Though they would both fit into Thomas jun. and Sarah's family it would be a bit odd if they missed baptising both children called Samuel.

I wonder if Thomas jun. moved from Tendring to Tolleshunt Knights because he inherited property from his grandfather Samuel or an uncle Samuel who died in 1739 - just a thought! :)

Could've done!

Ahhh... Essex Assizes, 1700 - there's a James Newcomb of Tollesbury. Hmmmm....

Sessions:
04 Jul 1669:
Recognizance of Samuel peck, Matthew Newcomb and James Newcomb, all of Tollesbury oyster-dredgers; all to answer for their riotous entering upon the oyster laying of John Story of West Mersea in "Sawcutt Fleete Channell" and unlawfully taking and carrying away several quantities of oysters from thence.

And then.....!

2 April 1715
Title:   Will of James Newcome of Tollesbury, oyster dredger.

OH HURRAH!!! It's been scanned and it's on SEAX so I shall see what it says. *punches the air*

Not quite as useful as I'd hoped:

he mentions his sister Ford's three children Thomas, William and James.

His daughter-in-law Sarah Cranfield, wife of John Cranfield (presumably, as with Sarah Thompson, wife his late son who remarried).

His servant Daniell Gegon and someone called George Cooke (may be significant re the burial of one of the T. Knights Samuels).

But it wouldn't surprise me if there's a connection as Tollesbury and T. Knights are contiguous.

Looked through the Tollesbury register, but it has lots of gaps.

25 Apr 1677, John Stanton, a seafaring man, married Mary Newcomb, spinster.
10 Nov 1713, John Cranfield married Sarah Newcomb by banns.
12 Jun 1711, baptism of Sarah, daughter of Sarah Newcomb.
29 Sep 1709, James Newcombe donates 2pence for the "Poore Palatinates."

It's unfortunate Tollesbury didn't have the people we needed but it was worth a try.

Just been searching the internet for Newcombs but can find nothing useful.

Not a Newcomb but I did find this on Family Search: Henry Townsend baptised 14 Mar 1699 son of James and Mary at St Mary at the Walls, Colchester. Seeing as this was the same church Mary Townsend married Nathaniel Littlewood I wondered if there might be a connection.
