ALLEN b Camelon bet 1812 - 1816 & daughter PORTEOUS
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 00:28 BST (UK) »
What became of Elisabeth ALLEN who in the 1861 census was a charwoman
age 45 "b abt 1816 Camelon" living in Grahamston "at Road Rd From Falkirk To Carron West Side"?
(with her was 7 year old daughter). Cannot find Elisabeth Allen in 1871 census.
Nor her  death which the oral history story told suggests was just before June 1874
when daughter married and emigrated.

I did find an Elisabeth Allen IGI batch C11490-6 born 15 April 1812 to James Allan and Margaret Paul,
in Stirling but cannot be sure she's the same person.

Elisabeth Allen's daughter in the same 1861 census was Barbara Porteous b abt 1854 Grahamston,
Stirlingshire ref 1861 census 7 yr old daughter of Elisabeth Allen (but death cert after emigration years later suggests b 1850). Cannot find her birth record.

Father may have been George Porteous b July 1807 Larbert, Falkirk,
foundry labourer who lived as a boarder at various places around Falkirk
and apparently died single age 61 in Grahamston found by a neighbour so no clues there.

So I'm stumped - unless anyone has these names in their tree...

Hi Sparkle ,

Have you obtained the 1874 marriage certificate ?
It should give Barbara's mother's name and tell you if she was deceased.
It might name her father as well  :-\

Elisabeth Allan age 38 washer women living Grahamston, Falkirk, born Falkirk,
unmarried(1851 Census - freeCEN website)
I can only find one death for an Eli* All*n born 1816 +/- 5 years in Stirling(SP)

Elizabeth Allan death 1870 Falkirk Stirling , born c1814

That may explain why you can't find her in the 1871 Census(?)

Yes, that's her thanks. I discovered that Elizabeth Allan was a spinster until age 55. In March 1869 she married John Leishman a widower age 65.  He worked as a Lock Keeper on the Forth and Clyde Canal (info from marriage cert). She died the following year.

I found her daughter Barbara in the next census 1871 living at same address as John Leishman.  Downloaded from SP it was readable, but had been mis-transcribed on an ancestry website search,  which was why I had trouble finding them (submitted a correction).

If any Leishman researcher happens to read this, I’d be interested to know if John Leishman’s first wife Christian Allan b abt 1808 Falkirk  was sister of his second wife Elizabeth Allan.  Christian’s death cert Dec 1868: father Thomas  Leishman a warehouseman, mother Elizabeth Leishman MS Mirk.
