From Electoral rolls

1949 - Canterbury - Selwyn

WALLIS - John Thomas - Burnham, wood splitter

[No other WALLIS at same address ]
-------------

1949 - Ashburton

WALLIS - John Thomas - farmer
WALLIS - Mary Ann - married
    .... both at Lynnford

1954 - Ashburton

WALLIS - John Thomas - farmer - 6 Clark Street, Ashburton
[No Mary Ann WALLIS on this roll. ]

----------------------

So, John Thomas WALLIS at Selwyn 1949 (and earlier), is obviously not the husband of Mary Ann (of Ashburton)

AND  ... John Thomas WALLIS (farmer) of Clark Street, Ashburton in 1954, appears to be the widower of Mary Ann ?
 :D

I'm even more confused now.   ::)

The chap at 6 Clark Street ... is "John Thomas" (1954) and then "Thomas John" in "1957".   ???

[Not finding a marriage to an Olive ... ? ]

Of course, John Thomas / Thomas John at 6 Clark Street (even though he is also a farmer at one stage), may not be the same man who is the widower of Mary Ann.

Starting to get this now.   ;D

There's a marriage of a John Thomas WALLACE - shortly after the 1952 death of Mary Ann WALLIS.
