Camerons of Lagantigown, Duthil.
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 17:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,  My Cameron ancestors gave their address as Lagantigown within the parish of Duthil.
Their have been various spellings , this one from a 1912 death certificate.
I have been unable to find out anything about this place and wonder if anyone knows if it was an area or maybe the name of the farm on which they resided.
I think it would be in the Avielochan area.
1911 census says Duthil, South Ward.
Any info much appreciated. Thanks.

Have addresses either side of Lagantigown on the census page been checked to see whether they can be found on corresponding maps etc?

No,  i haven't checked neighbouring pages. The info i have is as follows.  1841 Duthil, Lagantigown.  1851 Duthil, Lagantigown.  1861 Duthil, Farmers House. 1871 Duthil, Avielochan. 1881 Duthil, Avielochan. 1891 Duthil, Avielochan. 1901 Duthil.  1911 Duthil & Rothiemurchus-South Ward, Laggantigown.
I believe all these addresses to be the same place.
Other info is the 1912 death certificate for Catherine Cameron with the address given as Lagantigown and a birth in 1855 for Jessie Cameron, address Lagantigown.
Marriage 13th January 1843- Alexander Cameron residing in Lagantigh & Catharine Cameron, Granish.

Laggantygowan is the name of the Cemetery at Loch Vaa, just north of Avielochan (i.e. between Aviemore and Kinveachie on the A95 road). It seems from Google search that the graveyard's location still causes motoring problems - it certainly did in my young days as a bobby in Aviemore back in mid-1970s.

I did find their entry for 1851 on freecen http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl for 1851 which is great as this does have the facility to go back and forth on addresses next to the one you are interested in.

So far (as much as I have gone back or forth) you have:

Mullachard - www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1941182 - includes modern map that might help for orientation.
Gallory
Easter Gallory
Lagantighgown ( Place: Dores Dutl&Rothimrch-Inverness-shire)
Arinlochan
Knock Of Granash
Granash

NLS maps may well help to try and source locations.

Also, directories of the period such as here http://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/pageturner.cfm?id=85597701 This includes an entry for a Cameron, widow Ann at LAGGAN-TIGHE-GOWN (entry no.12 down, not necessarily alpha!).
