Aghadowey, I wondered about John Johnston and no apparent children after Samuel's birth in 1872 as I had found a death for John Johnston on 13 Sept 1872 of age 45 who died in an accidental drowning and thought perhaps???

Since parents married in 1861 I would suspect there were other children born between 1861-1863 (start of registration) if not between 1861-1867 (daughter Elizabeth born 1868).

Please post links to details you've found to save us from looking up the same information.

On 12 January 1902 in Portglenone Samuel married Helen Jane Millar who was born 9 April 1875 in Bell’s Land, Greenock Road, Port Glasgow to who are possibly Irish parents Robert John Millar and Mary Ann Kerr.
We have found a 1881 census for Greenock showing John, Mary and children Robert, Samuel and John whose children’s dated match but not the parents, the parents are shown to be born in Ireland and the children in Glasgow, Ireland and Greenock respectively. This could be yet another ref herring of course.
We have found the 1928 death certificate of James Johnstone aged 60 whose parents were John Johnston and Mary McCulloch. We believe him to be a brother of Samuel.

Stenny, a ha.Thats why I couldn't find marriage in Scotland-Samuel married in Portglenone. As to Robert John Millar & Mary Ann Kerr, they married in 1874 in Port Glasgow.James Johnston is indeed Samuel's brother having been born to John Johnston & Mary McCullagh on 31 March 1865 in Ferriagh, Ballymoney, co Antrim.I also checked 1864-1867 in Ballymoney & Ballymena but no other births to John and Mary. For 1861- 1864, maybe check parish registers. Kim

Stenny, I checked the catholic parish registers of Ballymoney from 1861-1867 to see if I could find any other Johnston baptisms with no success. Funny tho', the baptism for James is not in those registers either. Kim

Her parents married 1874 in Scotland- luckily the certificate should have names of their parents-

Online tree (needs all details verified) gives more details- same tree also lists Samuel Johnston's parents as both dying before 1931 which isn't really helpful-

Valuation Revision Book (1864) for Fernagh:
5a. Mary Johnston changed to William Johnston
6. James McCullagh

Valuation Revision Book (1865-1884) for Fernagh shows quite a few changes for those 2 properties. Those families may or may not be related to John Johnston & Mary McCullagh. If one or both are connected it's possible John & Mary were just there a short while in one of the houses.
