1788 Falkirk Gillespie marriage
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 22:56 BST (UK) »
back in 2002 I copied this from the IGI but since can't find anything else:

Robert Gillespie marries Mary Millar 18 Jan 1788 in Falkirk
Batch m119704, Source call 1041944, film 6902157

My Robert b. abt 1789-1796 in Falkirk had a son abt 1830 by unknown first wife that he named Millar Gillespie. As yet, I've nothing on him. I would love to know if this Robert married to Mary is my Robert's parents~
My earliest is Robert Gillespie born about 1791-1796 in Falkirk to Robert Gillespie (1768) of Falkirk and Margaret Millar of Carriden. He marries about 1817 to unknown woman and has Janet, Alexander, Margaret, Millar and David. In 1842 he marries Jean/Jane Melrose and has Catherine, John, Agnes and James. James is my ggrandfather. Robert dies 1868 in Falkirk Poor House. For info on my Gillespie family

There are 3 marriages for Robert born about 1791 and they may all pertain to him. Robert Gillespie married 3rd Jean Maxwell 20 Oct 1832
Laurieston Presbyterian, Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland

I could only find the 1851 census transcription on find my past, it would be worth checking Scotlands People for the detail.

1851 Back Row, Falkirk – GILLESPIE, born Falkirk
Robert 60 a Moulder, Jean wife 35
Children; Miller 21 (Labourer), Jean 13, Ketherine 8, John 6 & Agnes 4

A Miller Gillespie died Greenwich, London Q2/1858 - Vol 1D page 410.

As this is quite an unusual name it could well be him. I would imagine he was named after his grandmothers surname.

Hope this helps.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Monica, I know believe the Margaret Gillespie is the mother of my Robert (1796-1868) and wife of Robert Gillespie (1763-1834). Her parents were John Millar and Ann Alexander of Airth/Falkirk.
