Re: South African Norvals

This has a question that has bothered me too in recent times.
Given the fluidity of spelling back in the 1700s it is not surprising how many spelling variations there are for 'Norval' - Norwall/Norwell/Norvell/Norwal are all used for James in his marriage to Janet Watson.

My current understanding is that 'Charlotte' Watson is a misremembered (anachronistic) name and that there is a plausible ancestor in Janet Watson (1748 - after 1785), wife of James Norwall. They married in Glasgow in 1765.
James and Janet had the following family all born in Glasgow, with the exception of Archibald, born in Dumfries:
1765   m. in Glasgow + New Kilpatrick, James Norwall & Janet Watson
1766   Jean NORWELL
1768   James NORWALL
1771   John NORWELL (sen.) *
1774   Janet NORWELL
1776   Archibald Norwell *
1781   Anaple NORVELL
1785   William NORWAL *

My ancestor, John Norvall (jr.) (1799-1875) was the son of John Norwell (1771-) and Janet Foyar and the 4th member of that party.

James jr. (1768-1828) remained as a prominent combmaker in Glasgow. His wife and son continued the business for some years after his death.
