It would help us to begin with if we could identify the medal. Can you describe it, or better still post a picture?
Design on front and back, shape, ribbon colours, any writing (including around the rim), that sort of thing...
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

There was a William Railton who served in the Royal Artillery from c1860 to 1864. Born Brampton, Cumberland abt 1833. There are notes on the front page saying 'served in India 9 years 5 months in E I Co (East India Company)' and 'served in Burmah (Pegu) campaign of 1851 and 1852 - medal and clasp. See enclosed letter from India Office'. Unfortunately the letter has been lost. The medal will have a young Queen Victoria on one side and two figures on the reverse. It would also have a clasp saying PEGU.

Following the India Mutiny the armies of the E I Co were transferred to the British army. The artillery were disbanded. So he joined the RA after coming home. His record says that his intended place of residence (in 1864) would be Durham. But he may be living with his wife Mary in Cumberland in 1891. Occupation is Drill Instructor and what looks like School Attn (Attendance?) Officer

Does your family have any connection with these places?

Ken

It's the Indian General Service. Medal 1852-95
The pegu clasp dates it back to 1852 and a minor action in the Anglo -Burma wars.

If you want go restore the appropriate ribbon to it, it should only cost a pound or two.
Here's what it should look like.

It does sound as if Ken has found your man. Start with that record and see what it tells you.
