What are the options for obtaining an 1884 birth certificate or baptismal details?

You can order a copy of the birth cert from GRONI in Belfast  http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro
or a cheaper option is to order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon. Provided you give them the place, year, quarter, volume and page number, they should only charge €4. http://www.groireland.ie/

For the baptism, you would need to know where he was baptised. The church would usually have the original, but PRONI in Belfast holds copies of many church records from that period. (The records are not on-line).

Thanks Elwyn - does the photocopy arrive via email as a PDF?  (Is that an option?)

No. There's no e-mail option for the GRO Roscommon photocopy service. You download the application from, then post or fax it back to them. The photocopy then comes through the post about 2 weeks later. If you want this cert quickly, you'll need to order it from GRONI which will cost £14 plus any search fee if you don't have all the info they seek. But they will send it to you within a couple of days. They are quick.

FYI current pricing is €6.00 rather than €4.00 for a photocopy.
It is worded as "Search and photocopy of entry in the Register".

Doesn't that mean they would provide me with what I already have?
(I know the Q he was registered in).

If I understand correctly, I actually need a copy of a certificate so I can get some details.

should only be €4 per cert ...you dont need a search if you include the full references

make sure to ask for a research cert.

There’s a €2 discount if you provide them with the place, year, quarter, volume and page number. This discount doesn’t appear on their website. I order certs from them about twice a month and can confirm the €4 price was accurate a few days ago.

Search and photocopy means they look for it, and then they copy it. That’s what you want isn’t it? (A photocopy of the full birth certificate). You get the €2 discount because by giving them the reference numbers, they don’t actually have to search. They can go straight to it. Put the reference numbers on the blank section below the question about adoption.
