Lovely old maps - Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Friday 12 October 12 05:46 BST (UK) »
Just thought I'd point out that Ancestry today have released lots of lovely old maps. I just found a map from the Civil War era of a small town my ancestors lived in - wonderful!

England, County Maps, 1695-1940 can be directly accessed here: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2068

There were lots of other map collections released today so be sure to check them out. :)

For Scotland, the National Library of Scotland maps website gives free access to a wide range of old maps of Scotland, including large-scale Ordnance Survey ones and some fairly detailed 16th, 17th and 18th century ones.

In the 'Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire' image set of the Ancestry collection, there are 925 digitised pages, mostly consisting of a written history of Liverpool (Thomas Baines, 1852).

There is a super map of Liverpool in 1670 on page one, but if you just want to browse other maps in this section, they are between pages 888 and 925. Good maps of Yorkshire towns, but not that much on Cheshire, and Lancashire coverage is mostly Liverpool and Manchester
